Clinical Pilates

What's the difference between clinical and non-clinical pilates? Clinical pilates is provided by physiotherapists and Osteopaths who have specialised training in diagnosing, rehabilitating and preventing both pain and injury. This enables us to make 'clinical' decisions that help you get the most out of your body.

THE HISTORY OF PILATES

Joseph Pilates (1883-1967) was born in Mönchengladbach. His mother was a biopath and his father a doctor. As a child, he suffered from asthma among other things, but with a healthy lifestyle and lots of training he became a strong athlete and managed to defy his illnesses and weaknesses.

He developed his own training methods based on a variety of sports and combined these with studies of human and animal physiology, movement and anatomy.

As a young man, Joseph Pilates traveled with a circus troupe where he acted as a strong man and it was with this troupe that he was interned in a military camp in England during World War I. Inside the camp, Joseph quickly became to be in charge of physical training and retraining of wounded soldiers. In this way, Pilates developed a large part of his well-known training equipment, including the reformer (Universal Reformer) the other well-known training tools.

Joseph Pilates trained from 1919-1925 in the Hamburg military police and in 1925 traveled to New York where he opened his first American training studio with his own form of training. He quickly became popular with the elite dancers and continued throughout his life to develop his unique training methods, just as he never stopped developing his special training equipment.

Pilates managed to train and educate two students, Kathy Grant and Lolita San Miguel in his method. In addition, many of his students, as well as his wife Clara Pilates, and his protégé Romana Krysanowska have passed on and taught the method that has created, and still creates, such unique results.

More and more people are opening their eyes to the very special properties that the training method, now called Pilates, contains and we love it here at Exercise Thought Lilydale
